Peek behind your new flat-screen and you’ll spot a row of identical sockets. One of them—probably unlabelled—can replace three audio cables and push lossless Dolby Atmos across a single copper thread. Most owners never flip the switch.
The port everyone ignores is already earc-ready
Since 2009 manufacturers have shipped TVs with an HDMI socket that carries sound in both directions. Called arc (Audio Return Channel), it lets the set spit internal audio—Netflix, tuner, Xbox—back down the same cable feeding the picture. No extra optical lead, no forgotten RCA pair. The 2017 refresh, eARC, quadrupled bandwidth to 37 Mbps, opening the gate for uncompressed 7.1 and object-based tracks. Yet industry data show barely one in five buyers ever enable it.
Activation takes 30 seconds. Plug the soundbar or AV receiver into the socket marked ARC/eARC, enable “HDMI-CEC” in settings, and toggle the TV’s digital-audio output from “PCM” to “Auto”. The difference is immediate: lip-sync errors vanish, remote volume commands pass through, and the living-room clutter shrinks by half.

Why manufacturers stopped bundling manuals
Television profit margins are now under four percent; paper inserts were axed first. The result: a generation of viewers who stream 4K HDR nightly without realising their sound is locked in stereo. LG’s 2024 firmware update quietly turned on eARC by default; Samsung still buries the toggle three menus deep. Sony labels the port plainly, then hides another identical one beside it, sowing doubt.
Soundbars have responded by shipping without optical cables entirely. The message: use the HDMI that already exists. Early adopters who do report a 3 dB jump in dynamic range—roughly the gap between DVD and Blu-ray audio—without spending an extra dollar.
The next frontier is 48 Gbps HDMI 2.1b, promising 8K video plus 24-bit audio on the same pin. If history repeats, most owners will ignore it until the industry removes every other option. ARC ports will still be there, blinking unused, waiting for the curious to notice.
