The US Navy just handed Pittsburgh’s Gecko Robotics the largest robotics contract in its history: a five-year, $71 million deal to scour 18 Pacific Fleet vessels for cracks, corrosion and battle-worthiness using AI-driven machines that climb, crawl and swim where human inspectors fear to tread.

Gecko claims its ultrasonic sensors and digital twins can spot defects 50 times faster than manual checks, shaving months off maintenance cycles. On one amphibious assault ship, a single robotic sweep of the avionics bay erased a 90-day delay overnight. The robots start with the USS Boxer (LHD-4), an amphibious flagship that has spent more time in dry dock than at sea since 2020.
