That innocent-looking USB-C cable in your drawer can either crawl at 480 Mbps or spit out an 8K feature film in under four seconds. The difference is USB4, and the port gives away nothing.
Same oval, new brain
USB4 tunnels PCIe 4.0, DisplayPort 2.1 and USB 3.x down the same 24 pins, switching lanes on the fly. Result: 40 Gbps today, 80 Gbps (120 Gbps asymmetric) on v2 silicon, plus up to 240 W of juice—enough to run a gaming laptop and a 6K monitor off a cord no thicker than a shoelace.
Yet the connector is still the familiar oval. No blue tab, no squarish logo—just the tiny trident stamped on the rubber. That’s why most buyers grab a “3A fast-charge” cable and wonder why their external NVMe crawls at 35 MB/s.

How to read the cryptic sleeve
Flip the package. USB4 certified cords must state “40 Gbps” or “80 Gbps” and carry the trident plus the speed digit. Wattage rides on a separate line: 100 W (5 A) or 240 W (Extended Power Range). Thunderbolt 3/4 compatibility adds Intel’s lightning bolt, but it’s optional—many 80 Gbps cables skip it to avoid licensing fees.
Inside the over-mold sits an E-Marker chip. Cheap clones either leave it out or flash 10-year-old firmware. Plug the suspect cable into a MacBook Pro or a CalDigit dock: Apple’s system report will list negotiated speed and wattage. Windows users can run USBView; if the cable shows “Gen 4” under SuperSpeed, you’re golden.

Why your next dock costs more than a console
Controller silicon is scarce. As of May 2024 only Intel’s Goshen Ridge, ASMedia ASM2464PD and a handful of VIA Labs chips handle 80 Gbps signaling. Add active retimers for cables longer than 0.8 m and the BOM balloons. Belkin’s 1 m 80 Gbps/240 W cord retails for $69; Cable Matters asks $79 for the 2 m version. Anker stays mum on pricing until Q3, but distributors whisper $89 for the 3 m active model.
Early adopters are already hitting the ceiling. LumaForge’s 8K raw workflow station ships with four USB4 ports; Blackmagic’s new 12K camera records straight to an external NVMe over USB4, saturating the bus. The company claims 1,100 MB/s sustained—matching internal SSDs and cutting post-production ingest time by half.

The trap door: usb4 ≠ thunderbolt 4
Intel reserves Thunderbolt 4 for 40 Gbps and mandatory dual 4K display support. USB4 is “up to” 80 Gbps, but vendors can implement 20 Gbps and still badge it USB4. Translation: read the box, then read it again. A $12 “USB4 20 Gbps” cable is legally USB4, yet slower than a decent USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 cord.
Certification lists help. The USB-IF database now filters by “40 Gbps” and “80 Gbps” tiers; Thunderbolt 4 cables appear on Intel’s separate portal. Cross-check before checkout—return policies rarely cover “my RAID is only hitting 300 MB/s”.
Bottom line: the cable market won’t self-sort. Until regulators force transparent labeling, the 80 Gbps secret handshake stays in the fine print. Buy certified, keep the receipt, and watch your file bar rocket across the screen in silence.
