The 100 mbps ceiling nobody advertises

TV makers aren’t cheating; they’re economizing. A gigabit PHY chip adds about three dollars to the bill of materials. Multiply that by 50 million units and you’ve erased an entire quarter’s profit. So they slap in the cheapest Fast-Ethernet silicon, firmware-lock it at 100 Mbps, and hope the glossy bezel distracts you. Bufferbloat, not bandwidth, becomes the enemy.

Power users bypass the choke point with a $25 USB-to-Ethernet dongle—but only if the TV’s OS whitelashes the driver. Most don’t. LG’s webOS flat-out refuses; Samsung’s Tizen accepts select ASIX chipsets and then throttles them to USB 2.0 speeds. The workaround that survives: run a Raspberry Pi 4 or Apple TV 4K as front-end, pipe everything over gigabit, and relegate the TV to dumb-panel status. Brutal, effective, and the only way your gigabit subscription stops being an inside joke.
