Z fold 7 gets underwater camera – a samsung gamble?
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 just gained a surprisingly niche feature: Ocean Mode, originally designed for deep-sea researchers, now available on its flagship foldable.
A dive into foldable photography
The update, version 5.0.08.2 of the Expert RAW app, tackles the inherent challenges of underwater photography – washed-out colors, the dreaded blue-green tint, and the disruptive effects of currents. While the Z Fold 7’s IP48 rating limits its submersion to splashes and brief dips, Samsung is wisely cautioning users against saltwater exposure.
Originally conceived for the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s oceanographic program, Ocean Mode actively corrects color casts, minimizing motion blur, and offers adjustable interval shooting – perfect for capturing still images every two, five, or ten seconds. It’s a significant step beyond the typical camera capabilities you’d expect from a smartphone, let alone a foldable.

Beyond the hype
Let’s be frank: this isn't a feature most consumers will actively seek out. The Z Fold 7 already boasts a 200MP primary sensor – a considerable investment in imaging hardware. However, integrating specialized modes like Ocean Mode subtly elevates the overall value proposition, closing the gap between the S-series flagship and its foldable counterpart. I observed the demo at Unpacked – the real-time color correction, witnessing the suppression of red light as depth increased, was genuinely impressive. But let’s be honest, I’m not envisioning myself routinely deploying my Z Fold 7 for underwater expeditions.
Samsung’s commitment to expanding the camera toolkit for the Z Fold series is a welcome development, a tacit acknowledgement that foldable cameras have historically lagged behind their traditional counterparts. It’s a calculated risk, adding complexity to a device already navigating a crowded premium market. But, frankly, it’s a gamble I suspect many early adopters will find worth taking, provided they’re equipped with the right, waterproof housing, of course.
